Life Happens in the Gray
I am more than my anxiety. More than my depression. More than the stigma of mental illness.
Alongside my battle with Gremlins has been something else—a deep calling. A connection to that which is bigger than us. To Spirit.
I have always believed in the oneness of the Universe. In a connection that exists between all of us and that which is all.
Yet even in Spirit, my Gremlins existed.
That became one of my greatest sources of shame.
I convinced myself that if everything I was learning was true, then surely I should be able to transcend my anxiety. If I just meditated more. Trusted more. Believed more. Stayed focused on the lessons.
If I could simply be, shouldn’t the suffering disappear?
So I tried.
I became a Reiki Master. I gave Angel Card Readings. I hosted circles discussing The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I communicated with Spirit Guides and Spirit Animals. More than twenty years ago, I sat in ceremony with healing bowls before many people had even heard of them.
There were many lessons. Beautiful lessons.
I learned.
I grew.
And there were times when I could hold onto the peace, the connection, the feeling of wholeness.
But only for a while.
The Gremlins always came back.
And when they did, they brought shame with them.
Not only was I struggling with anxiety and depression, but I believed I was failing spiritually too.
I felt like a fraud.
How could I help others find healing when I couldn’t seem to heal myself?
Even after opening a Healing Studio, I secretly questioned whether I belonged there.
What right did I have to help others when I couldn’t even help myself?
Fear.
Shame.
Gremlins.
They all fed each other.
Everywhere I looked, there seemed to be another promise.
“Do this and you’ll heal.”
“Think this way and you’ll stop suffering.”
“Raise your vibration.”
“Manifest a different reality.”
Each promise became more food for my Gremlins.
Apparently I couldn’t even get Spirit right.
So I smiled.
I practiced.
I learned.
And I pretended.
Pretended I wasn’t struggling.
Pretended I wasn’t suffering.
Pretended the Gremlins weren’t still whispering.
Then something shifted.
Not because my anxiety disappeared.
Not because I finally mastered spirituality.
But because I stopped believing I had to choose between two parts of myself.
Inside me live two dragons.
One has always been deeply rooted in this Earth. It knows pain, loss, fear, anxiety, survival and the messy reality of being human. But it also carries resilience, courage and the strength it takes to keep going when life feels impossibly hard.
The other has always looked toward Spirit. It carries faith, hope, connection, wonder and the reminder that I belong to something greater than myself.
For years, I thought my Earth Dragon and Spirit Dragon were at war.
I spent decades trying to make one stronger than the other.
I believed healing meant silencing my Earth Dragon so my Spirit Dragon could finally soar.
What I didn’t understand was that neither dragon was trying to win.
They were trying to teach me.
I call them my Earth Dragon and my Spirit Dragon.
For years I thought one had to defeat the other.
Now I see something entirely different.
The magic was never in choosing one.
The magic was always in allowing them both to live.
For so long I believed life was black and white.
Earth or Spirit.
Fear or Faith.
Broken or Healed.
But life isn’t lived at either extreme.
Life is lived in the Gray.
The Gray is not a place between the dragons.
The Gray is where both dragons are welcomed.
It is where suffering and joy coexist.
Where anxiety doesn’t erase wisdom.
Where depression doesn’t cancel purpose.
Where faith exists alongside fear instead of pretending fear isn’t there.
Where humanity and Spirit stop fighting and begin listening.
That was my lesson.
Not how to escape my suffering.
Not how to conquer my Gremlins once and for all.
Not how to become perfectly healed.
My lesson was learning how to live alongside it all.
How to find meaning within it.
How to love myself through it.
Today, I don’t need to choose between my dragons.
I need them both.
My Earth Dragon reminds me that I am human.
My Spirit Dragon reminds me that I am alive.
Together, they remind me that I am whole.
Because life doesn’t happen after we’ve conquered our anxiety.
Life doesn’t happen after we’ve become perfectly healed.
Life Happens in the Gray.
And if you’ve ever felt like you were failing because your healing wasn’t perfect…
If you’ve ever believed your struggles somehow erased your wisdom…
If you’ve ever felt caught between your humanity and your Spirit…
Perhaps you’ve already been living in the Gray.
You just didn’t know it yet.
I want to help you find your Gray.
The place where your fear and your faith can both belong.
The place where your humanity and your Spirit stop fighting and begin listening.
The place where healing isn’t found in choosing one truth over another.
The place where Life Happens in the Gray.
